There is an interview on the schedule that I am incredibly looking forward to. On February 6, an icon from the Dutch house scene will join me in the studio for the second episode of STEAM: none other than DJ Jean.

Our roots on the dance floor

Our shared history takes us back to the early 90s, to the steamy nights in the legendary club iT. While Jean brought the room to ecstasy as a DJ, I stood on a block as a dancer. Together, we experienced the rise of an era where everything seemed possible and freedom on the dance floor was limitless.

Now, years later, we are going to unpack those memories together, but we will especially look at the present.

What will I talk about with DJ Jean?

I want to go beyond the standard anecdotes with DJ Jean. I am particularly curious about his vision of the sensuality of that time compared to the parties of today. Some themes we will explore include:

  • Masculinity and Vulnerability: How did the predominantly gay scene of the iT, a world of ultimate expression and openness, shape DJ Jean's view of his own masculinity during those more conservative years?

  • The boundaries of the night: In a time of endless afterparties, the boundaries between friendship, intimacy, and work often blurred completely. How did he navigate that intense connectedness?

  • The tension of anonymity: Has the raw, almost tangible sensuality of the 90s been lost now that everything is immediately captured on a telephone screen, or has it simply taken on a new form?

Join the conversation

I am very curious about what questions this raises for you. Are there things you have always wanted to know about sensuality in the house scene of the early 90s? Come to the recording on February 6 and join the conversation. Sign up here.

Keep an eye on the website and my socials for this special episode.

Love, Christina
